Orchid Extravaganza 2019

  • This year’s Orchid Extravaganza celebrates Singapore’s pop culture with a creative spin on familiar icons, as seen through the eyes of multi-talented Singaporean singer-songwriter Dick Lee. Melding floral artistry and pop art, the orchid display features landmarks and objects that have become part of local culture. From housing to recreation and food, these have been given a playful makeover under the creative direction of Dick Lee and designer Yang Derong, to reflect Singapore’s unique blend of tradition and modernity. They stand out amidst a colourful landscape of over 15,000 orchids, comprising more than 80 varieties including heritage orchids such as Aranthera Anne Black, Aranda Bertha Braga and Dendrobium Tay Swee Keng.

Introducing the Icons of Singapore

Orchid Extravaganza takes you on a journey of the icons of Singapore with a pop twist as we celebrate the 200th anniversary of Sir Stamford Raffles' arrival this year. The amalgamation of vivid colours is a celebration of Singapore's vibrant multi-ethnic society.

Heritage Orchids

Keep a lookout for the various heritage orchids on display! These are orchids that are distinctive and worthy of preservation or local hybrids named after Singaporean personalities and places of interest.

Vanda Miss Joaquim

Singapore’s national flower and the first orchid hybrid from Singapore, the Vanda Miss Joaquim was hybridised by Agnes Joaquim, a horticulturist residing in Singapore. It was selected as the national flower of Singapore for its vibrant color as well as its resilience and year-round blooming quality.

Arachnis Maggie Oei

  • Commonly known as the Scorpion Orchid, this was the first Singaporean hybrid grown commercially as a cut flower. It was widely cultivated in the 1950s and 60s. The hybrid comes in a variety of colors including red, white and yellow, and its free-flowering quality makes it a popular plant.

Aranthera Anne Black

  • Named after Lady Black, wife of Sir Robert Black, former Governor of Singapore, this hybrid was created by Singapore Botanic Gardens and is the first VIP orchid to be named. Since then, orchids have been named in honour of visiting state dignitaries and VIPs to foster goodwill. Aranthera Anne Black is an outstanding cut-flower as the older blooms do not fade even as the spike continues to flower.

Aranda Singa Gold

  • “Singa” means “lion” in Sanskrit and refers to Singapore, the Lion City. The golden blooms make this hybrid a popular landscaping plant. Bred by Singapore Botanic Gardens, it has won the “ACE Grand Champion for Cut Flower Trophy”, a Silver Medal at the 18th World Orchid Conference in Dijon, France, and a ribbon prize at the 22nd World Orchid Conference in Guayaquil, Ecuador.

Dendrobium Tay Swee Keng

  • A popular cut flower appreciated by both local and overseas markets for its deep purple blooms. Each pseudobulb can produce more than 2 sprays of flowers, with blooms lasting up to 14 days. This is one of several outstanding Dendrobium hybrids by Koh Keng Hoe, a passionate local pioneer breeder who has played an important role in the cut flower industry in Singapore.
