Dahlia Dreams 2020

  • Get caught up in the tale of the heavenly race and feast your eyes on Dahlia Dreams – The Heavenly Race, the first-ever collaboration with Beijing Florascape Co., Ltd. in Southeast Asia.

Gracing the Flower Field with their famed Mosaiculture, the horticultural art of creating giant topiary-like sculptures with the use of bedding plants to carpet metal frames, the display also features an abundance of more than 70 Dahlia cultivars, and other festive plants commonly associated with the season such as Narcissus, Azalea and Celosia.

Usher in good luck this Chinese New Year with a spectacular Fu medallion at the entrance of Flower Dome. Then stroll past a landscape akin to a Chinese painting, dotted with peach blossoms, red-crowned cranes and a pavilion. Finally, make a grand entrance through the magnificent archway placed front and centre, and catch up with the rat, the first to reach the Jade Emperor by outwitting the other 11 zodiac animals. Proudly flanking the centre field, two golden rats wish you a happy and prosperous new year!

Prosperity in Bloom

Surrounded by more than 70 Dahlia cultivars and numerous festive plants commonly associated with the season, this Lunar New Year will be unforgettable with a trip to our magnificent floral display.

  • The stars of our show, dahlias belong to the Asteraceae family, and are native to Mexico, South America and Colombia. While appearing to be just one bloom, each flower head is made up of a mass of tiny individual flowers called an inflorescence. In the centre lie disc florets that resemble tiny tubes. These are surrounded by showier, strap-like petals known as ray florets that attract pollinators such as birds and bees.

Appearing in all shapes and sizes, dahlias have been officially divided into different groups or classes – decorative, ball, cactus, anemone, collerette and pompon, to name a few.

The most spectacular form of horticultural expression, Mosaiculture is the art of composing a motif, an image, a picture or a sculpture using carefully selected and pruned flowering or foliage plants. It has its origins in the embroidered flower beds (often termed “carpet beds”) which composed Renaissance gardens. Spot our various displays of Mosaiculture around the Flower Field when you visit Dahlia Dreams!

The World's Best Blessing

  • It is a traditional custom to display the Chinese character 福 (Pinyin: fú) during the Lunar New Year, or Spring Festival. It means good fortune, blessing and happiness.

Peach Blossom Spring

  • Inspired by the most exquisite pavilion in the landscape gardens of Northern Suzhou, Where the Moon Meets the Wind, the pavilion on display is the perfect spot from which to take in the rest of the garden. The peach blossoms by the pavilion are reminiscent of those seen by the fisherman in Tao Yuanming’s fable The Peach Blossom Spring, which led to an ethereal utopia where people led an ideal existence in harmony with nature, unaware of the outside world for centuries.

The Golden Rat

  • Usher in the Lunar New Year with the Metal Rat, also known as the Golden Rat! Flanking the centre field, two three-metre-tall rats made out of plants with a golden hue wish visitors a very happy and prosperous new year.

Red-crowned cranes

  • Adding to the grandeur is a flock of life-sized, majestic red-crowned cranes, thought to have a lifespan of a thousand years, and hence a symbol of longevity and good luck.

The 12 Zodiac Signs

  • The Chinese zodiac is based on a twelve-year cycle, and each year relates to an animal sign. The story of the great race is the most widespread when it comes to the origins of the Chinese zodiac. The Jade Emperor ordered that animals would be designated as calendar signs and the twelve that arrived first would be selected.

The Archway

  • Striking in its height and width, the archway in the centre field is based on the famous Dongdan (Eastern Single) Archway, built in the Ming Dynasty during the reign of Emperor Yongle. Memorial archways were first built in Beijing in the Yuan Dynasty, and were tall-roofed gateways that towered over the city’s streets to decorate them as well as entrances to temples, parks, officials’ residences and tombs.
